1. Hetzner Cloud: best VPS hosting for value

Hetzner Cloud is the German provider's virtual server range, and it gives the most hardware per euro of the six. Its cost-optimised page lists the CX23 at €5.99 a month excluding VAT with 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe and 20 TB of included traffic in the EU. The Arm-based CAX11 matches them at €6.49.
The regular-performance CPX line starts at €6.49 for 1 vCPU, 1 GB and 20 GB. Locations are Falkenstein, Nuremberg and Helsinki, plus Hillsboro and Ashburn in the US and Singapore. Traffic allowances drop sharply outside the EU: US plans such as the CPX11 (2 vCPU, 2 GB, 40 GB) cost €17.99 and include 1 TB.
A caution: every CX and CAX plan on the page was marked "currently unavailable. Please check back later" when we looked, so confirm stock in the console before planning around them. Hetzner has no UK data centre.
Pros
- Largest spec per euro of the six, with 20 TB EU traffic
- Hourly billing with a monthly cap
- EU locations in Germany and Finland, plus US and Singapore
- Arm (CAX) and x86 options
Cons
- Cost-optimised plans showed as unavailable on 29 October 2026
- Much smaller traffic allowances in the US and Singapore
- No UK data centre
- Prices shown excluding VAT in euros
Pricing: CX23 €5.99/mo, CAX11 €6.49/mo, CPX02 from €6.49/mo, excluding VAT, as of 29 October 2026. Extra EU traffic is billed per TB (the page quotes €1.00).
Best for: Developers and small teams in Europe who want the most CPU, RAM and bandwidth for the money.
2. DigitalOcean: best VPS hosting for beginners

DigitalOcean sells VPS instances called Droplets, and it is the easiest place to start if you have never run a server. Basic Droplets begin at $4 a month for 512 MiB of RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB of outbound transfer. The $6 plan gives 1 GiB, 25 GiB and 1,000 GiB, and $12 buys 2 GiB, 50 GiB and 2,000 GiB.
From 1 January 2026 Droplets bill per second with a 60-second minimum, capped at the monthly price. Inbound transfer is free and the page does not state an overage rate. Backups cost 20% of the Droplet price weekly or 30% daily, and snapshots are $0.06 per GB a month. Regions include London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, New York, Toronto, Bangalore, Singapore and Sydney.
It costs more than Hetzner: $24 gets 4 GiB and 2 vCPU. You pay for the console, documentation and managed add-ons. Dedicated-CPU Droplets start at $42 a month. See also 1Panel if you want a control panel on top of a bare VPS.
Pros
- Clear plan ladder from $4 to $96 a month
- Per-second billing with a monthly cap
- Many regions, including London and Frankfurt
- Free inbound transfer
Cons
- More expensive per GiB of RAM than Hetzner or Contabo
- Backups add 20% to 30% to the bill
- Overage rate not stated on the pricing page
Pricing: $4, $6, $12, $18 and $24 per month for Basic Droplets as of 29 October 2026; backups 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) extra.
Best for: First-time server owners who value documentation and a simple dashboard over the lowest price.
3. Vultr: best VPS hosting for global reach
Vultr is a cloud provider with the widest footprint here: its public regions API lists 33 locations, including London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Stockholm, Warsaw, Johannesburg and Tel Aviv. That makes it the best choice when users are spread across continents.
Vultr's pricing page returned a 403 to automated requests, so the figures below come from the company's own public plans API, not the page. The Cloud Compute plans are $5 a month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage and 1 TB bandwidth; $10 for 1 vCPU, 2 GB, 55 GB and 2 TB; and $20 for 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 80 GB and 3 TB. A $2.50 IPv6-only plan (0.5 GB) also exists.
The specs are lower than Hetzner or Contabo at each price, so you are paying for location choice. Confirm current prices at checkout, because an API is not a substitute for the pricing page.
Pros
- 33 regions across six continents
- $5 plan includes a full 1 TB of bandwidth
- Simple, predictable plan ladder
- London and Manchester both available
Cons
- Less RAM per dollar than Hetzner or Contabo
- Pricing page not machine-readable for us
- Cheapest tier is IPv6-only
Pricing: $5/mo (1 GB), $10/mo (2 GB), $20/mo (4 GB) for Cloud Compute, from Vultr's plans API on 29 October 2026.
Best for: Teams that need servers close to users in many countries.
4. OVHcloud: best VPS hosting for UK buyers

OVHcloud is a French provider whose UK page quotes sterling prices with and without VAT, which is why it suits UK buyers. VPS-1 gives 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe and 500 Mbps public bandwidth at £3.31 a month excluding VAT (£3.97 with VAT). VPS-2 is 4 vCores, 8 GB and 75 GB at £6.29; VPS-3 is 6 vCores, 12 GB and 100 GB at £9.01.
Every plan lists unlimited traffic, anti-DDoS protection, a dedicated IPv4 address, a 99.9% SLA and daily automatic backups.
Two things are unclear. The configurator links carry an "upfront12" parameter, which suggests the prices assume a 12-month prepayment, but the page never says so. And the VPS page does not list its data centres in the text we could read; OVHcloud's separate Public Cloud page names London, Gravelines, Strasbourg and Frankfurt, but that is a different product, so confirm VPS locations at checkout.
Pros
- Unlimited traffic on every plan
- Anti-DDoS protection and 99.9% SLA included
- Sterling pricing with and without VAT
- Daily backups included
Cons
- Commitment term not stated on the page
- VPS locations not listed in the text we fetched
- No free trial or money-back wording on the page
Pricing: VPS-1 £3.31/mo ex VAT (£3.97 inc VAT), VPS-2 £6.29, VPS-3 £9.01, as of 29 October 2026; likely assumes a 12-month upfront payment.
Best for: UK and EU buyers who want low prices, unlimited traffic and built-in DDoS protection.
5. Akamai Cloud (Linode): best VPS hosting for steady, simple use

Akamai Cloud is the home of Linode, and linode.com now redirects to akamai.com. The Shared CPU plans are listed in dollars: Nanode 1 GB is $5 a month for 1 vCPU, 25 GB storage and 1 TB of transfer. Linode 2 GB is $12 (50 GB, 2 TB), Linode 4 GB is $24 with 2 vCPU, 80 GB and 4 TB, and Linode 8 GB is $48 with 4 vCPU, 160 GB and 5 TB.
Hourly billing applies, with the 1 GB plan at $0.0075 an hour, and the page states egress overage at US$0.005 per GB. We did not find a backup price or a region count on the pages we fetched, so check those before ordering.
Compared with Hetzner you get a quarter of the RAM at a similar price. It sits fifth because the numbers do not stand out, not because anything is wrong.
Pros
- Clear, stable plan ladder from $5 to $48
- 1 TB of transfer on the cheapest plan
- Stated overage rate of US$0.005 per GB
- Hourly billing
Cons
- 1 GB RAM at $5 trails Hetzner and Contabo
- Backup pricing not shown on the pages we fetched
- Brand has moved from Linode to Akamai, so docs and URLs vary
Pricing: Nanode 1 GB $5/mo; Linode 2 GB $12/mo; Linode 4 GB $24/mo; Linode 8 GB $48/mo, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: Developers who want a predictable, long-running provider without much tuning.
6. Contabo: best VPS hosting for maximum resources per euro

Contabo is a German provider that sells the biggest specs at the lowest headline price. Its Cloud VPS 4 lists 4 vCPU cores, 8 GB RAM, a 100 GB SSD, one snapshot and a 200 Mbit/s port. The page headline says plans start "from €4.40/Month", while the plan card shows €5.50, and the lower figure is tied to a 24-month term. Cloud VPS 6 has 6 vCPU, 12 GB and 200 GB SSD or 100 GB NVMe at €7.50.
Traffic is described as unlimited, but with an asterisk: outgoing traffic is unlimited under a fair usage policy, and Contabo reserves the right to throttle servers with exceptionally high or disruptive usage. The minimum initial contract is one month.
The locations page says there are 9 regions and 11 locations, including five data centres in Germany, a UK site in Portsmouth, three US regions, Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney and a newer one in India. We have not benchmarked it, so check independent tests before running anything critical.
Pros
- Most vCPU and RAM for the price
- UK data centre in Portsmouth
- One-month minimum initial term
- No setup fee mentioned
Cons
- Fair-use traffic with a throttling clause
- 200 Mbit/s port on the entry plan
- Headline price depends on a 24-month term
- Performance not verified by us
Pricing: Cloud VPS 4 from €4.40/mo on a 24-month term; €5.50 shown on the plan card; Cloud VPS 6 €7.50, as of 29 October 2026. The page states prices include applicable taxes.
Best for: Hobby projects and test servers where raw resources matter more than guaranteed performance.
How we compared these tools
This is desk research from vendor pricing pages and public documentation, read on 29 October 2026. We did not benchmark CPU, disk or network speed, so we make no performance claims.
Weighting: specs and price at the entry tier (30%), traffic allowance and overage rules (20%), locations and latency options (15%), billing flexibility and lock-in (15%), backups and security basics (10%), and clarity of the vendor's own pricing page (10%). Where a page was blocked, ambiguous or showed stock as unavailable, we say so.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best VPS hosting in 2026?
Hetzner Cloud is the best VPS hosting in 2026 on value: its CX23 lists 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe and 20 TB of EU traffic for €5.99 a month excluding VAT. Check stock first, because those plans showed as unavailable on 29 October 2026. DigitalOcean is the better choice for beginners.
How much does a VPS cost?
Entry plans here start at roughly £3 to £6 a month: OVHcloud VPS-1 is £3.31 ex VAT, DigitalOcean $4, Vultr and Akamai $5, and Hetzner €5.99 ex VAT. Prices differ mostly in RAM and included traffic, so compare specs, not just the monthly figure.
How much bandwidth does a VPS include?
It varies a lot. DigitalOcean includes 500 GiB on the $4 plan, Vultr and Akamai include 1 TB at $5, Hetzner includes 20 TB in the EU, and OVHcloud and Contabo list unlimited traffic, with Contabo applying a fair usage policy. Overage rules differ, and Akamai states US$0.005 per GB beyond the allowance.
Do I need a managed VPS or an unmanaged one?
The providers here sell unmanaged VPS, so you handle updates, firewalls and backups yourself. That suits developers and costs less. If you would rather not administer a server, a shared or managed host is simpler. A control panel such as 1Panel can help, though it does not replace security patching.
Which VPS provider is best for UK users?
OVHcloud is the best fit for UK users because it quotes sterling prices with and without VAT and offers unlimited traffic from £3.31 ex VAT. DigitalOcean and Vultr both list London, Vultr also lists Manchester, and Contabo has a data centre in Portsmouth. Hetzner has no UK location.
Is hourly billing worth it?
Hourly or per-second billing is worth it if you spin servers up for tests or short projects. DigitalOcean bills per second from 1 January 2026 and Hetzner and Akamai bill hourly, all with monthly caps. For a site that runs all year, the monthly cap means you pay the same either way.
