1. Cloudflare Registrar: best domain registrar overall

Cloudflare Registrar is the domain registration arm of Cloudflare, and its model is simple: registration, transfer and renewal prices are "always at or below what registries and ICANN charge us", with no markup. The page lists over 430 supported TLDs, free WHOIS redaction, free one-click DNSSEC and domains locked by default.
The page does not print a .com price. A third-party tracker, CostGoat, listed Cloudflare at $10.46 a year on 20 October 2026, with the same figure for registration, renewal and transfer. It expects the at-cost price to rise to $11.17 after Verisign's wholesale increase on 1 November 2026, because every registrar passes that on.
UK buyers should note that Cloudflare's documentation covers transfers of .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk domains, and says transferred .uk domains are locked for 60 days; we could not confirm brand-new .uk registrations. There are no loss-leader first-year deals, so a one-off cheap domain can cost less elsewhere. For hosting, see our best web hosting comparison.
Pros
- No markup on registration, renewal or transfer
- Free WHOIS redaction and one-click DNSSEC
- 430+ TLDs supported
- Domains locked by default
Cons
- No introductory discounts
- Vendor page prints no .com price
- New .uk registrations not confirmed
- Smaller TLD list than some rivals
Pricing: Sold at cost. About $10.46 a year for .com on 20 October 2026 per CostGoat, then about $11.17 after 1 November 2026. Verify on Cloudflare before buying.
Best for: Anyone holding domains long term who wants no renewal surprises.
2. Porkbun: best all-rounder and best for .co.uk

Porkbun is a US registrar with flat prices and generous free extras. Its page lists .com at $11.08 a year for registration, renewal and transfer, .net at $12.52, .org at $11.84 and .io at $51.80, all including ICANN fees. Some first-year sales apply, such as .org at $7.98 and .xyz at $2.04.
Every domain includes free WHOIS privacy, Let's Encrypt SSL, URL forwarding and up to 20 email forwards. Hosted email is $3 per inbox a month, billed annually. UK buyers will like that .uk and .co.uk are both listed at $5.66 for registration and renewal, which is the lowest .co.uk price in this comparison. The transfer column shows $0.00 for those, which we read as transfers not offered, although the page does not say so.
Porkbun says it passes the registry price on and expects .com to rise about 7% a year through 2030, with the next step on 1 November 2026 to roughly $11.81. Its knowledge-base article suggests renewing for up to 10 years to lock the current price.
Pros
- Same price for registration, renewal and transfer on .com
- Free WHOIS privacy, SSL and email forwarding
- $5.66 for .co.uk and .uk
- ICANN fees included in the displayed price
Cons
- .com goes to roughly $11.81 on 1 November 2026
- .uk transfers appear unsupported
- Smaller company with fewer bundled services
Pricing: .com $11.08/yr, .net $12.52, .org $11.84, .co.uk $5.66, USD, as of 29 October 2026; transfers include a one-year renewal.
Best for: Most buyers, especially UK buyers who want a .co.uk and free privacy.
3. Namecheap: best domain registrar for beginners

Namecheap is a long-running registrar with a simple search and checkout, and it is the friendliest for first-time buyers. Its own .com price page and domains page blocked our automated fetch, so we relied on its knowledge-base article and on search results that quoted its page. Those show a .com at $11.28 on sale, renewing at $18.48.
Namecheap's support article says that from 1 November 2026 .com registrations and transfers become $15.98 and renewals $19.98, both excluding the ICANN fee. That is a large step above the at-cost registrars.
Several third-party sources say WHOIS privacy is free for life, but we could not load a Namecheap page that confirms it, so check at checkout. The article suggests that renewing before 1 November keeps the old rate. If you also want hosting, note that Namecheap announced shared hosting price changes in May 2026.
Pros
- Easy search and checkout
- Free domain privacy per multiple third-party sources
- Multi-year renewals available before 1 November
- Official notice of price changes
Cons
- .com renewal $18.48, rising to $19.98
- Own pricing pages blocked our fetch
- From 1 November 2026 even registration is $15.98
Pricing: .com about $11.28 on sale and renewing at $18.48 now, then $15.98 registration and $19.98 renewal from 1 November 2026, excluding ICANN fee.
Best for: Beginners who value a familiar interface and who will check the renewal price.
4. GoDaddy: best domain registrar for a cheap first year
GoDaddy is the best-known registrar and the only one here with a one-cent .com. Its own domain cost guide, written in May 2026, lists .com at $0.01 for the first year with a three-year purchase required, then $22.99 a year plus a $0.20 ICANN fee. Its main domains page blocked our automated fetch.
The guide states free domain privacy is included with registration, though not every TLD allows privacy. GoDaddy's registration agreement says paid privacy or protection add-ons renew at an extra fee, and that renewal prices can change before renewal. Check the renewal column in your account.
The three-year lock-in is the catch. At $22.99 renewal, GoDaddy costs roughly twice Cloudflare or Porkbun for .com after the deal ends. Its advantage is the ecosystem: hosting, email and a website builder in one account, as we cover in best website builders.
Pros
- $0.01 first-year .com with a three-year purchase
- Free privacy on registration
- Large ecosystem of related services
- Well-known brand
Cons
- $22.99 renewal is the highest .com price here after Gandi
- Three-year purchase needed for the headline deal
- Add-ons renew at a fee unless cancelled
Pricing: .com $0.01 first year with 3-year purchase, then $22.99/yr plus $0.20 ICANN fee, per GoDaddy's guide dated 20 May 2026.
Best for: People who want a near-free first year and a single account for domains, email and site tools.
5. Gandi: best domain registrar for European buyers

Gandi is a French registrar that bundles an SSL certificate, two custom mailboxes, Anycast DNS and DNSSEC free for the first year with each domain. Its UK .com page (GBP, including VAT) lists registration at £14.33, transfer at £13.50 and renewal at £47.96, with a promotional £34.54 for two to nine years.
Its .co.uk page is kinder: registration from £7.13 (or £5.99 on a one-year promo), free transfers and renewal at £23.96, with £17.26 on a multi-year promo. The French page shows euros excluding VAT and a .com renewal of €31.98, so the figure varies by region.
Gandi's homepage does not mention WHOIS privacy beyond a note on GDPR, so we cannot confirm it from the vendor page. Gandi is expensive for renewals, which is why it ranks last, but it fits buyers who prefer a European company and want mailboxes with the domain. For the broader picture see our WordPress hosting comparison.
Pros
- Bundles SSL and two mailboxes in year one
- Free transfers for .co.uk
- Prices viewable in GBP, EUR or USD
- European registrar
Cons
- .com renewal £47.96 on the UK page
- .co.uk renewal £23.96
- WHOIS privacy not stated on the page we read
Pricing: .com £14.33 registration, £47.96 renewal (UK page, inc VAT); .co.uk from £7.13, renewing at £23.96, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: Buyers who prefer a European registrar and will use the bundled mailboxes.
How we compared these tools
This is desk research from vendor pages, vendor knowledge-base articles and cited third-party trackers, read on 29 October 2026. Namecheap and GoDaddy blocked automated access to their main pricing pages, so those entries lean on their support or guide pages, and we say where. We did not register or transfer any domain.
Weighting: renewal price and honesty about it (35%), first-year price (15%), privacy and security basics (20%), TLD coverage including .co.uk (15%), extras (10%), and ease of use (5%). The weights are editorial judgement. Because Verisign's wholesale .com price rises on 1 November 2026, all .com figures here are time-sensitive.
How to choose
- If you hold domains for years, pick Cloudflare Registrar for at-cost renewals.
- If you want a .co.uk or .uk, pick Porkbun.
- If you are new and want a familiar interface, pick Namecheap.
- If you want the cheapest possible first year and will stay three years, consider GoDaddy.
- If you prefer a European registrar with bundled mailboxes, pick Gandi.
- If you have not picked a name yet, NameWizard can generate ideas.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best domain registrar in 2026?
Cloudflare Registrar is the best domain registrar for most people in 2026 because it sells domains at cost with no markup, free WHOIS redaction and free DNSSEC. Porkbun is the better choice for .co.uk domains at $5.66 a year, and Namecheap suits beginners. All .com prices rise after 1 November 2026.
Why are .com prices going up on 1 November 2026?
Verisign, which runs the .com registry, is raising its wholesale price from $10.26 to $10.97 on 1 November 2026 under its agreement with ICANN, according to CostGoat. Registrars pass the cost on. Porkbun says it expects about 7% a year increases through 2030, and you can renew for up to 10 years to lock the current price.
Is WHOIS privacy free?
At most of these registrars, yes. Cloudflare lists free WHOIS redaction, Porkbun includes free WHOIS privacy with every domain, and GoDaddy says free privacy is included with registration. Namecheap is widely reported as free for life, which we could not confirm on its own pages. Not every TLD supports privacy, so check yours.
Why does my domain renewal cost more than registration?
Many registrars discount the first year and renew at list price. Namecheap shows .com at $11.28 on sale and $18.48 on renewal, and GoDaddy charges $0.01 in year one for a three-year purchase, then $22.99. Cloudflare and Porkbun charge the same for registration and renewal, so compare the renewal price before you buy.
Can I get a .co.uk domain from these registrars?
Yes at Porkbun, which lists .co.uk and .uk at $5.66 a year, and at Gandi, which lists .co.uk from £7.13 with renewal at £23.96. We could not read UK prices on the Namecheap or GoDaddy pages. Cloudflare documents transfers of .uk domains, but we could not confirm new registrations.
Should I buy my domain and hosting from the same company?
You can, but it is rarely cheapest. Free domains with hosting last a year and renew at standard rates, and refund terms can differ. Keeping the domain at an at-cost registrar and pointing it at any host also makes switching hosts easier. See our best web hosting guide for the free-domain terms at each provider.
