1. Tidio: best for most small businesses

Tidio is a customer service and sales platform that combines live chat, a helpdesk and automation, with an AI agent called Lyro. Its homepage focuses on ecommerce and lists chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger as channels, with 120-plus integrations and platform support for Shopify, WordPress and Wix.
On the pricing page, Free is $0 with 50 billable conversations and the first 50 Lyro conversations free for life. Starter is $24.17 a month and Growth starts at $49.17, which appear to be the annual-toggle prices (the page offers "Annually (2 months free)" but does not label them). Plus starts at $300 a month plus usage, and Premium is sales-led. Lyro AI Agent is an add-on from $32.50 a month, which is where the real AI cost sits. A 7-day trial needs no card.
Tidio lists GDPR, EU AI Pact, CCPA and SOC 2 on its homepage, which is useful context for UK and EU buyers, though we did not audit it. It is easy to start and cheap to leave, but busy support desks will outgrow its conversation caps. For comparison, the directory also lists simpler builders such as Chatwith, Chatling and Zipchat.
Pros
- Free plan with 10 seats
- Lyro answers from your own site data and can hand over to humans with context
- Channels include WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and email
- 7-day trial, no card needed
Cons
- AI Agent is billed as an add-on, not included
- Plans are measured in billable conversations, which cap quickly
- Monthly prices are not shown next to the annual-toggle figures
- Plus jumps to $300 a month plus usage
Pricing: Free $0; Starter $24.17 a month; Growth from $49.17; Plus from $300 plus usage; Lyro AI add-on from $32.50 a month. USD, annual-toggle figures, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: small shops and service businesses that want chat, automation and an AI agent without a developer.
2. Intercom: best for support teams with real ticket volume
Intercom is a customer service helpdesk, and Fin is its AI agent. Intercom says Fin averages a 76% resolution rate across more than 12,000 customers, which is a vendor figure we have not verified. The homepage lists phone, email, chat and Slack among Fin's channels, and offers Simulations for testing multi-step conversations before launch.
The pricing page charges per seat plus per outcome. Essential is $19 per seat a month for new customers (down from $29), Advanced $85 and Expert $132, with a 14-day free trial. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, and can be used with an existing helpdesk such as Salesforce, subject to a monthly minimum. Add-ons include Copilot at $29 per agent a month and a Pro add-on from $100.
This is the only platform here priced per resolution, which is fair if Fin resolves chats and punishing if volume jumps. Early-stage startups can get up to 93% off plus a year of Fin free through its programme.
Pros
- Full helpdesk plus AI agent in one product
- Pay-per-outcome Fin pricing is transparent at $0.99
- Simulations and analytics to tune answers
- Phone, email, chat and Slack channels
Cons
- Per-seat costs rise quickly from Advanced ($85) upwards
- Resolution fees make budgets harder to predict
- Add-ons (Pro, Copilot, proactive messaging) stack up
- Resolution rate figures are vendor claims
Pricing: Essential $19 per seat a month (new customers), Advanced $85, Expert $132, plus Fin at $0.99 per outcome. USD, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: support teams of five or more that want AI resolving tickets alongside human agents.
3. Chatbase: best for simple no-code knowledge bots

Chatbase lets you build an AI agent from your own data and deploy it on chat, email and voice. Features include Procedures (step-by-step workflows written in plain language), Actions (order lookup, plan changes), a shared helpdesk inbox and an internal assistant called Backstage. It lists GDPR, SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA, and says data is not used to train models.
The pricing page lists Hobby at $32 a month billed yearly (700 message credits, one agent), Basic at $120 (4,000 credits, voice, API access), Business at $400 (15,000 credits) and a custom Enterprise tier. All paid tiers include a 7-day trial; there is no free plan. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000.
Watch the add-ons: removing the "Powered By Chatbase" badge is $1,188 a year, an extra agent is $300 a year, and extra training storage is $300 per 10 MB a year. Training content is capped at 40 MB on every self-serve tier.
Pros
- Quick no-code setup with actions and procedures
- Voice and email, not just website chat
- Compliance claims including SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA
- Credits bought on demand do not expire
Cons
- One agent per tier unless you pay extra
- Branding removal costs $1,188 a year
- 40 MB training cap on self-serve plans
- No free plan
Pricing: Hobby $32 a month, Basic $120, Business $400, all billed yearly; Enterprise custom. USD, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: businesses that want a reliable FAQ and support bot without building flows.
4. Botpress: best for developers and custom agents

Botpress is an AI agent platform for customer support, with Botpress Studio as a visual builder and Botpress Desk as an AI helpdesk. It deploys to webchat, WhatsApp and Slack and integrates with helpdesks such as Intercom, Zendesk, HubSpot and Salesforce. It claims SOC 2 and GDPR compliance.
Its pricing page lists Free ($0, 100 conversations, 3 seats, 3 AI agents), Plus at $150 a month (250 conversations, $25 of AI spend, unlimited agents, WhatsApp, white-label webchat), Team at $750 (1,500 conversations, unlimited seats) and a custom Enterprise tier. Plus and Team are billed annually.
The detail to read twice: extra conversations are sold in packs ($65 per 100 on Plus, $50 on Team), added automatically at 95% of quota, and the page says you cannot turn auto-recharge off. That makes Botpress a poor fit for anyone who needs a hard budget ceiling.
Pros
- Free plan to build and test
- Unlimited AI agents from Plus
- Unlimited seats on Team, and the vendor says there is no per-seat cost
- WhatsApp and white-label webchat on Plus
Cons
- Auto-recharge for extra conversations cannot be disabled
- $150 entry price for just 250 conversations
- Sizeable jump to $750 for Team
- Voice only on Enterprise
Pricing: Free $0; Plus $150 a month; Team $750 a month, both billed annually; Enterprise custom. Extra conversations $65 per 100 on Plus. USD, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: developers and technical teams that want control over flows and are comfortable with usage billing.
5. Stammer.ai: best for agencies reselling white-label bots

Stammer.ai is a white-label platform for building and selling AI chat and voice agents, aimed at agencies. It says 1,300-plus agencies use it. The directory has a page for it at /tools/stammerai.
The pricing page lists Standard at $49 a month (500 chat replies, 120 voice minutes, no advanced AI models, no white label) and Pro White Label at $99 a month (five chat and five voice agents, custom domain and branding, MCP support, bring-your-own API keys). Overage is $0.01 per message and $0.10 per voice minute. Annual billing saves 20%.
The trial terms are muddled: the pricing page says 7 days for Standard and 14 for Pro, but the site is inconsistent, so check before entering a card. This is a reseller platform, so it is a poor match for a single business that only needs one site bot.
Pros
- Full white-label branding on Pro
- Chat and voice agents on one platform
- Agencies set their own client pricing
- Cheap per-message overage
Cons
- Standard plan has no advanced AI models
- Trial lengths unclear
- Built for agencies, not single-site owners
- Agent counts are small before $10-each add-ons
Pricing: Standard $49 a month; Pro White Label $99 a month; Enterprise custom; annual billing saves 20%. USD, as of 29 October 2026.
Best for: agencies that resell AI chat and voice agents under their own brand.
How we compared these tools
This is research, not hands-on testing. We read each vendor's live pricing page and homepage on 29 October 2026 and note where figures are vendor claims. We ran no resolution-rate benchmarks, so we do not rank on answer quality.
Weighting: pricing predictability including usage and overage rules 30%, fit for the buyer type (small shop, support team, developer, agency) 25%, channels and integrations 20%, compliance and data handling claims 15%, and free-plan or trial availability 10%.
